Artist: The Ting Tings Song: Silence (Bag Raiders Remix) Why I like this song: I love almost anything remixed. Even songs that I don’t like in their normal form can become a really fantastic song once remixed. I do like this song, Silence, outside of the remix, but I also think the remix adds a lot of fun. This one has me dancing no matter where I am!
Artist: Keane Song: Sunshine Why I like this song: I enjoy pretty much everything about this one. It’s such a soft, sweet song, and somewhat out of character for my typical dancy style.
Artist: The Smashing Pumpkins Song: The Sacred & Profane Why I like this song: This song is off Machina I, which was the last full length studio album release the Pumpkins did with the majority of their core lineup. They have undergone a lot of transformations during the years, and by the time this album came out, James Iha had already left the band. This and the album before it, Adore, aren’t as well liked in much of the main-stream rock community, because they’re a bit of a departure from some of what that community loved about the band. The Pumpkins went on a huge hiatus shortly after this. However, I think that these later albums contain some of their best work as a band. I’m not sure if it was the strife within the band itself that caused this even better writing, or if it’s just more of Billy Corgan’s evolution as an artist, but I think this song is a perfect example of how the Pumpkins are always great. It really displays their ability to produce a fantastic and beautiful song without the traditional harder rock elements of screaming and crunchy guitar.
Artist: Walk the Moon Song: Anna Sun Why I like this song: First, the way it starts out with that 80s feel is just so awesome. I absolutely adore it. I love the vibe of the video, the fact that it contains a bunch of friends of the band dancing around, and even the unexpected dance routine in the middle. Love it all! The song is tons of fun, and I really like the entire album.
Artist: Franz Ferdinand Song: Dark of the Matinee Why I like this song: To an extent, the Franz Ferdinand crew are a little wacky. In some ways, I don’t know what this song is about. It seems to be about first love, but then it also seems a bit stalkery. I love how it’s a bit slow during the verses, but the chorus picks up and it’s a lot of fun. Plus these guys always put out the most interesting and quirky videos! They’re a little like the videos you’d see by the Monkees, but a bit more updated.
Artist: Erin McCarley Song: Hello/Goodbye Why I like this song: I love the way Erin McCarley puts a song together, and this one is no exception. I adore this whole song, especially that it’s kind of a message wrapped up in a sweet melody. It seems like one of those things we’ve all felt at some point…you seem to care more about someone than they care about you, but you just can’t let them go quite yet.
Artist: fun. Song: Some Nights Why I like this song: fun. is a band I really like, despite the fact that I didn’t like their first single from this album, We Are Young. I was lucky enough to see them in concert a couple of years ago before they hit it really big cuz they were opening for Panic At the Disco! This song is reportedly sort of not about anything, Nate Reuss was just thinking and came up with it. Something about this song just speaks to me, it gives me chills practically every time I hear it, which I usually do on repeat. I think the video really fits it too.
Artist: Chairlift Song: Bruises Why I like this song: A few years ago, this song was featured in an Apple commercial for something, which is how I was introduced to it. I enjoyed it enough to buy the song, and remembered my love for it recently when my iTunes shuffled to it. I love the beat of the drums, the synth sound through part of it, and the fun melody. All around a good song for me.
Artist: Hall & Oates Song: You Make My Dreams Why I like this song: It’s no secret that I love pop music, but for some reason, I’m not super into Hall & Oates. The notable exception is this song, of course. I listen to this song at least once a week, and I’ll often listen to it on repeat for six or so times. I think I might have fallen in love with this song because of the association with (500) Days of Summer, but does it really matter? It’s a fun song, and the video cracks me up.
And just for some extra fun, here’s the scene I mentioned above:
For the record, I don’t love musicals in general. But I absolutely adore flash mobs. Or I think I do, I’ve only ever seen them on TV but I really enjoy them there. In general, I absolutely love a random song and/or dance number in a movie or TV show. Not like how they do it in Glee, but more like how they do it in My Best Friends Wedding. Or the flash mob scenes in Friends With Benefits. And yes, I also love cheesy rom coms. Especially when they star Justin Timberlake.
Artist: Remy Zero Song: Glorious Number One Why I like this song: In my opinion, Remy Zero is a band that just plain rocks. With that in mind, I like almost everything of theirs that I hear, so I don’t have any specific reason I enjoy this song. Other than the sheer awesomeness, obviously!
