The Good German
Starring George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Tobey Maguire
I had been looking forward to this movie for a long time. I thought “Cate Blanchett, WWII, a not goofy George Clooney? Count me in!”
Unfortunately, I found it a little boring. This could again be because of the illness I had at the time. In all fairness to the things I watched while I was sick, I should probably watch them again. But then what if I watch and dislike it even more?
To me, the movie was a little long and just not enough mystery. It was totally predictable that George Clooney kept showing up everywhere right in the nick of time. Tobey Maguire seemed a bit in over his head, I just didn’t feel like he fit in. At one point during the movie, my boyfriend and I basically had this conversation:
Me: “What is Tobey Maguire doing, George Clooney will totally kick his ass!”
Him: “Well, Tobey Maguire IS Spider-man.”
Me: “George Clooney WAS Batman, and everyone knows that Batman is way cooler than Spider-man.”
Then we had a bit of a debate about which superhero is cooler. I stick by my Batman comment. I’m totally ignoring the statements about Spider-man being stronger, la la la.
We had this same essential conversation when Tobey and Cate were having a fight. Him saying how Tobey is Spider-man and I said “Cate Blanchett is Galadriel!” No one will ever convince me that Spider-man is cooler OR stronger than Galadriel!
I think maybe, despite not knowing much about this movie, I built it up a bit too much in my mind. I am inclined to nearly love everything Cate Blanchett is in, and while she didn’t disappoint, the rest of the movie kind of did.
I do like George Clooney not being all smug and goofy though.
My Rating: 3/5
