Starring Richard Gere and Marcia Gay Harden
These sorts of stories are super interesting to me – I love seeing movies based on real events that turned out to be fake. Think Shattered Glass or Catch Me if You Can. I like to see what people were able to pull off and usually wish that I had been somehow involved. Not really in the scheme, just around it in general.
I also often wonder what drove the person to do something like this. The movie doesn’t give enough back story for me to understand why Clifford Irving decided to make up this autobiography of Howard Hughes, but I’d like to know just how it all came to be. Maybe I’ll wikipedia him or something.
I liked the performances, although for some reason I have this bias against Richard Gere. I’ve never disliked him in anything that I can remember, he just doesn’t really appeal to me either. It was interesting to see the way his character moved more and more towards this role of maybe being crazy, thinking Hughes operatives were after him and that Hughes himself was giving material for the book. Who knows if he ever was, he was a weird guy.
So anyway, it’s not a bad movie and an interesting story. Worth renting or watching on cable.
