Religulous

Starring/Produced By Bill Maher

Do you ever watch something and then kind of forget you saw it?  That would be me with this movie.  Which makes it sound like it was bad, and it wasn’t, it was just, for me, forgettable to an extent.

I think there are a lot of things that contributed to my forgetting about this movie.  I watch Bill Maher every week and I did not hear anything new from him in it all.  His religious beliefs are well known to anyone familiar with him, I believe.

I was also not in a position to be swayed by his movie at all.  Religion isn’t my thing and that has been well established way before I even knew who Bill Maher was.

That being said, I think he makes a good point with things like raving the tenets of Scientology – things like that sound crazy.  And really, all sorts of things in this same vein sound crazy to people outside of them.

I do like that this is a “bigger” movie than others similar to it.  A lot of the stuff about the story of Jesus being similar to a lot of others wasn’t new to me – I saw all that when I watched The God Who Wasn’t There.  But hopefully shining light on the similarities on a bigger stage will do some good.  I’m not for erradication of religion necessarily, but I do think it’s really important for people to start accepting that other people have different beliefs and fanaticism in any fashion is dangerous.  I don’t care what side you’re on, extremists exist all around and they scare the shit out of me regardless of what denomination they practice.

Anyway, go see it if you want to be amused, or if you are feeling skeptical and want to learn some things.  Also, Bill Maher was funnier than he is on his TV show, so that’s always a plus.

My Rating: 3/5
