Kit Kittredge: An American Girl

October 21, 2008 By: dorolerium Category: Movies

Starring Abigail Breslin, Julia Ormond, & Joan Cusack

This movie was showing on the plane ride home from Cincinatti to Salt Lake, so I figured I’d watch it to pass the time.  It was one of those movies that I saw previews for when it was coming out and I thought “eh, looks cute but I’ll probably never get around to it.”  Little did I know I’d have such the opportunity!

I’m not embarrassed to say that for the most part, I enjoyed the first half or maybe two thirds of this movie.  Although I generally feel that Abigail Breslin is a bit over-rated (she always feels like she’s over acting to me), she did fine in the role and was cuter than I’ve seen her before.  The story in an overall sense appealed to me, how young people were affected during the Great Depression is kind of fascinating.

That being said, I would venture that this isn’t necessarily an accurate description of what life was like for a child during this time period.  I don’t think this is anywhere near representative of the average 10 year olds experience, so many more families were affected much earlier on by the depression, and Kit herself says at the beginning of the movie that at that point, she didn’t feel like it had hit her.

I think I started to not like the movie as much when the kids began to try and figure out who the real robbers were and clear their friend Will of suspicion.  It’s an admirable thing to do, but it’s a bit unrealistic and I’m too cynical for it.  But, this is after all, a kids movie, so of course they’re going to be the heroes of the tale and work everything out.

The movie on the whole is good and I think younger girls especially will enjoy it.  It’s not a bad show, and you might even find yourself watching along with your kids ;)

See this movie if: You want an uplifting tale of how people can overcome adversity and get through tough times.

My Rating: 3/5
