It’s Monday! What are you reading? June 4, 2012

This is a weekly meme run by Book Journey!

Post the books completed last week, the books you are currently reading, and the books you hope to finish this week.

Mailbox Monday is a weekly meme that was created by Marcia at The Printed Page, who graciously hosted it for a long, long time, before turning it into a touring meme (details here).  It is hosted at Alternative Read for the month of June.

*****

Things were less busy this week, although I’ve been dog sitting so it’s been like a dog park around here!  My hot water heater also went out this weekend, and that has not been my favorite experience – it’s getting replaced this coming week!

Books completed last week:
The Reluctant Queen – Jean Plaidy: I’m a huge Plaidy fan, and this book was fantastic.  I really enjoyed it and loved that it presented Richard III in a different light.

Books I’m reading this week:
Lord John & the Scottish Prisoner – Diana Gabaldon: I haven’t started this one quite yet, but it sounds fantastic and I’ve wanted to read it for awhile.

Books ongoing:
Jane Eyre – Charlotte Bronte ~ Page 310: No Jane progress, I’m not bored with her, but she hasn’t been high on my priority list lately.

Books I acquired this week:
No new books this week!

What I watched this week:

  • Fashion Police, The Soup, Chelsea Lately,  The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, 1 girl 5 gays, The Ellen Degeneres Show, The Graham Norton Show
  • Keeping Up With The Kardashians
  • The Big Bang Theory
  • SavageU
  • The Big C
  • Community
  • Little Women

I have been meaning to try Jean Plaidy’s books for awhile now, particularly the Tudor fiction.

I hope you have a better week this week!

She’s one of my favorite authors of all time, probably the best when it comes to sticking with actual historical figures. I would definitely say pick something up soon :)

  2. Comment by Anne Bennett:

You are slowly reading Jane Eyre, I am slowly reading Emma. She comes in last every time when I pick a book to read. Hm.m.m. What I want is a warm sunny day, a hammock, and the will to just read Emma all day!

I feel the same way…I love Jane Eyre, and I think the fact that it is a reread for me makes me all the more slow. I think I’ll have more time in my schedule soon, maybe in July!

  3. Comment by Pussreboots:

Hopefully there will more Jane Eyre in your future. :)

My favorite read last week was Emily the Strange: Dark Times by Rob Reger. Please come see what else I’m reading.

I’ve only read the one Plaidy and it happened to be The Reluctant Queen, I liked her portrayal of Richard III without the rumour and innuendo but found it a bit lacking in emotion. Got another Plaidy favourite I should try?

Eeek the no hot water sounds awful, it’s winter over here, I wouldn’t cope LOL
Have a great week and happy reading :)

I would highly recommend The Lady in the Tower, which is about Anne Boleyn. That’s probably my favorite Plaidy, and one of the best portrayals I’ve seen of Anne as well.

It’s been difficult to cope with the no hot water…like, the dishes are piling up in my sink, because what’s the point of washing them in cold?! My landlord got the pilot light relit, but he said the entire unit is shot, so he recommends using the hot water sparingly and he’s getting the whole thing replaced. Apparently there is a good chance the pilot light will go out again, sigh. Ah well!

      • Comment by Teddyree:

Thanks I’ve added The Lady in the Tower to my wishlist, I’ve read a lot about Anne Boleyn so I’m keen to see Plaidy’s portrayal.

Hope the water heater has been replaced by now :)

I know it’s a mildly unfair comparison, but Plaidy’s version of Anne Boleyn is much better than that of Philippa Gregory :) Plaidy is so good at sticking (mostly) to the facts that we know, and she also slices through the rumor to give a more definitive idea to the reader. Hope you enjoy that one!!!

Water heater is not replaced yet :( I’m crossing my fingers that today is the day!

  5. Comment by Wendy:

Jane Eyre is one of my fave books! Hope you enjoy it eventually! :)

It’s one of my favorites too! I really do enjoy it, but I think I’m going a little more slowly since it’s a reread this time.

  6. Comment by Kathy Martin:

It looks like you had a good historical fiction reading week. I don’t think I have ever read anything by Plaidy. If I did it was years ago. I should check her books out again. My Monday report is here. Happy reading this week!

    • Comment by dorolerium:

Definitely check her books out! She’s an amazing author, by far my favorite historical fiction writer :)

  7. Comment by RAnn:

I read some Pilady years ago; I need to read some halfway serious historical fiction again, I’ve gotten too much into the mind candy stuff.

I know exactly what you mean! Sometimes I get caught up with the “fun” aspect of it and forget the rest, but Plaidy manages to combine the two with great results.

  8. Comment by Laurel-Rain Snow:

Some weeks are like that, especially when we have other distractions. Someday I want to read something by Gabaldon and Plaidy.

I have a book I’m slowly reading this week…I started it last week, and I’ve only finished 100 pages. But to see what else I read, and what I’m currently reading, here’s MY MONDAY MEMES POST

Hope you get your hot water heater soon! Mine broke awhile ago, and it’s amazing how much we count on hot water….

The past few weeks for me have definitely been like that – full of distractions! I’m hoping this week will be better, cuz I know the two weeks after that are going to be crazy!

  9. Comment by Gina, book dragon:

not sure how I’d cope without hot water.

I love dog sitting my SIL’s dogs. I go to here house and it’s like a mini-vacation.

I like your “what I watched” section.

I’ve had to limit my hot water usage this week – the heater is being replaced sometime soon! It’s been difficult!!!

I like dog sitting, but it’s been a lot of dogs for about six weeks here…I think we’re going to go no extra dogs for awhile, lol.

I find listing what I watched helps me keep track of why I didn’t read as much…and sometimes my watching is related to reading!

  10. Comment by Brunette LIbrarian:

Jean Plaidy is pretty fantastic :)

    Happy reading this week :)

I’ve been wanting to try Jane Eyre. I’m a little leery of the classic-ness of it. I’m afraid I’ll abandon it easily with the light spirit of summer around. Maybe I’ll give it a try though. I’ve only heard wonderful things about it. Enjoy your reading!

I think that Jane Eyre is one of the least classicy novel of the actual classics, but I know exactly what you mean. I would recommend at least starting it and seeing what you think at some point, it’s one of my favorite books of all time :)

  13. Comment by Mystica:

Jean Plaidy is one author I too never get tired of reading!
