Merlin 1:5

Oh Merlin, Merlin, don’t you understand that Lancelot is going to steal your love away?!  Well, two men will, but for now we’ll stick with Lancelot.

And guess who was a total spoiled bastard, as usual, and I loved it!  Actually Arthur was kind of nice this time, and for the second episode in a row, went against what Uther wanted him to do.  He outright defied him!

The production value was again, not that great.  It was really obvious that the griffin was a separate thing from the rest of the action, and I’m sure it’s just that the people in the UK don’t care as much about their TV as we do here in the US.

However, I would go so far as to say that I’m starting to like the show a little.  This episode was different from a formula standpoint, and I liked that the griffin just kind of mindlessly targeted people.  It was a magic creature so Merlin had to take care of it, but it was kind of refreshing that it was just after people…maybe it’s like a zombie, it needs brains so it doesn’t attack animals.  I dunno really, I just can’t think of any reason it would attack only people and deliberately leave the animals alone.

I also liked that Lancelot knew Merlin used magic, and he wanted to keep it a secret.  I know it’s the whole deal about Lancelot, but everything he did was just so noble, it’s hard to dislike him.  Kind of like Faramir in Lord of the Rings.

It was good timing for this episode to come along, because I really was about ready to give the show the boot.  I mean, that it’s a summer run show is bad enough news for it.  I generally give new shows a 3 to 5 episode chance, and this one came in right under the wire.  I’m not totally giving it my blessing, but I will continue to watch this season and see what happens.
