The Vampire Diaries 1:2
Remember how last week I said the show kind of disappointed me? Well despite that, I found myself really anticipating this weeks episode, to the point where I even asked myself “Is it Thursday yet?”
What I should have done, to satiate that anticipation, was go back and read my review of the first episode. Because while I wouldn’t say this one was any worse, I did not get some fun thrill that made my waiting worthwhile. It’s kind of like those episodes in the RW/RR Challenge where someone I really like goes home…I waited all week, just to be sad at the end.
I also found myself asking “Did I fall asleep?” when this episode ended. I am going to make a guess that they put fewer commercials in the first episode, therefore making it more action packed or whatever. But I felt strange enough about how short it seemed that I kept it on the DVR and will hopefully find the time to watch it again. And if I do that and find I did, in fact, fall asleep, I will write an amended review. Somehow, though, I don’t think I will find something terribly redeeming in a rewatch.
I know all this probably makes it sound like I hate the show, and I don’t. It’s just not what I was hoping for. And although I haven’t read the series, so I can’t fully attest to the accuracy of it, I did cheat and read about it on Wikipedia and I am wondering how closely they plan to follow the books. Because let me tell y’all, while it seems interesting to a vampire fan if they do, I don’t know if it’ll be the stuff of TV.
And since last time I made my complaints and such in list form, why stop now!
- Is every episode going to start with an attack by Damon as creepy fog vampire? This is going to get old for me fast, as in, I don’t want to see this intro for a few episodes at least.
- It’s totes adorable that both Stephan and Elena write like, the same diary entry! They are destined for luv.
- Love that Elena just walks into a perfect strangers house, simply because the door is open. I do that all the time. Cept in real life I think that’s called breaking and entering.
- Stephan: I have lots to apologize for. Omg, y’all, did Edward Cullen read The Vampire Diaries and get his tortured persona from Stephan?
- I don’t like that we see Damon in a mirror a few times. Or rather, if we’re going to see this, I want an explanation. At least in True Blood Bill explains it away by saying it’s a myth vampires perpetrated to make themselves seem like they aren’t vamps.
- The whole tough love punishment thing Jenna is doing kinda bugs me. Why doesn’t she just tell Jeremy that if he doesn’t shape up, the state is going to decide she’s unfit and he’s going to have to go into foster homes? Oh, wait, real life threats need not apply.
Okay, so last time I was all saying I wanted them to talk like Cordelia Chase. I learned in this episode that simply talking like her is not enough, as in when Caroline says “Cocky much?” to Damon. There was simply no attitude behind it! It’s as though the writers for the episode watched some BTVS and said “Wow, this dialog is witty and awesome. We must duplicate it.” Then the director said “OMG, you guys wrote some awesome dialog between Caroline and Damon. Too bad the actor playing Caroline just doesn’t have the spunk to pull it off. But we’ll go with it.”
Or else maybe the writers read this blog and they reshot some stuff for episode two just to win my praises. Cocky, much?
