Starring Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler, & James Marsters
For many years, I maintained that I didn’t really like Hilary Swank. After seeing her in a few non-Oscar nominated roles, I think maybe I just don’t like her in those particular performances. Or perhaps my opinion was skewed by the subject matter of this movie. Maybe even my love for James Marsters and Gerard Butler won me over. While I wouldn’t say I totally fell in love with this film, I did like it quite a bit.
I don’t think there was a single five minute stretch of this movie where I didn’t have tears in my eyes, and I honestly can’t remember when a movie did that. Even Waitress, which I notoriously get teary in, doesn’t affect me like this! I will freely admit that I am still sensitive to death as a whole, and especially deaths that seem untimely and the people have no chance of surviving. Now that I have been witness to the downward spiral of a terminal illness, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to view something like this with the same detachment again. Which may mean that everything I watch in the future is skewed by my personal experience, but so be it.
I’m sure some people would call it sappy, the concept of this movie. But I think it was very thoughtful of Gerry to write letters to his wife, and have them delivered for the year after his death. Although I’m sure I will never be able to say for sure without going through it, I think it would help me to know that the person I loved put effort into helping me get over their death, and if nothing else I’m sure during my time of grief I would appreciate reminders that I was loved in return. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to lose your spouse at such an early age, but I guess in some ways, watching this movie made me think more about what I want out of any future relationships I have.
The logic side of me knows it is pretty unlikely something like this would happen. More than likely, if your loved one has a terminal illness, they are probably dealing with everything that goes along with that, rather than writing you secret letters. But the romance, girl side of me sees the beauty in this. And honestly, this is a romance movie that comes closer to describing what I really want as a woman than other ones do.
Naturally, I love that James Marsters had such a big role in this movie. Granted, it’s not leading, but for him this was a pretty major movie appearance. I also half forgot that this movie just came out in 2007, aka it was shot relatively recently, because when he was first on screen I was like “OMG, why doesn’t James have blonde hair!” News flash – this is more like when he was shooting Smallville, not Buffy.
See this movie if: I don’t know if I would say I can give this movie a fair, more objective review. When it comes down to it, everything is skewed by our own personal experiences and opinions. In this case, I have a difficult time saying I think specific people would like or dislike the movie. It was for me, I’m glad I watched it.
My Rating: 3.5/5
Six Degrees of Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
As I already mentioned, this movie is starring James Marsters, who played Spike on Buffy
