Community 1:1

I have never really been a 30 minute sit com watcher.  Even the ones that people *really* like, such as Seinfeld, have never really been my kind of thing.  Thirty minutes is not a lot of time, and I usually don’t find things funny.

So why did I start watching Community, you must be asking?  Or if you’re not, that’s okay too.

The reason is quite simple: Joel McHale.  I love The Soup, and when I saw that he was going to be starring in a TV show, even though it isn’t exactly my cup of tea, I chose to watch it.

I know that the new TV season just started, and as of this moment I have only seen two brand new shows, but I can tell you right now that this is the better of the two.  It was a good premier, and I don’t feel like it needs several episodes to catch it’s stride.  I’m hooked from the start, no five episode threat for this show!

In the little bit of research I did about this show before writing this, I did not find answers to the questions I have, but that’s okay, because my research was lazy at best.  But these questions are: did they create this show with Joel McHale in mind?  Did they have him cast before they wrote anything?  Or did they rewrite for him?  Is he a writer on the show, in fact?  Yes, my research was lazy indeed.

I ask this because, as someone who watches him elsewhere, I don’t necessarily think this is a stretch for him, but rather very suited to who he is on The Soup.  For example, the joke where the guy calls him Seacrest?  If that wasn’t written specifically because Joel McHale is on the show, then that’s a great coincidence, since he’s always making fun of Ryan Seacrest.

I am also loving that he wears track suit bottoms with a suit jacket – hilarious!  Makes me wonder if that’s what he’s wearing while hosting The Soup.  Also, I will never get tired of jokes about Ben Affleck.

My favorite line from the show was

The funny thing about being smart is you can get through most of like without ever having to do any work

It’s funny, and half true!

So basically, I decided to watch this show because of Joel McHale, and I ended up liking nearly all the characters.  It’s a good show, I recommend it, and I will keep watching!

  1. I really hope this show makes it. But like you, it completely had me at the first episode. Particularly the whole Breakfast Club thing.

The Breakfast Club stuff was absolutely hilarious. It killed me that Abhed kept saying “this is like the Breakfast Club” then “this is not so much”. Great writing!
