Bored to Death 1:1

September 26, 2009 By: dorolerium Category: TV

I may be speaking a little prematurely with this statement, but I kind of think the title of this show is rather apt.  I feel like this is the kind of show I should probably like – I’m sure it’s supposed to be a cerebral show and something entertaining for smart people.  But I just wasn’t drawn in.  I was, in effect, bored to death.

It’s not as though the show sucked…I liked Ted Danson, and the smaller roles by semi bigger actors like Olivia Thirlby and Heather Burns, as well as upcoming appearances by Parker Posey and Oliver Platt.  But I will say that unless this picks up in the next four episodes, I very well may cut it from the schedule.  With more shows than there are days of the week, something is bound to get cut, and I have to say it’s bad news for you if I like The Vampire Diaries better.

There were a couple of interesting observations, I especially liked the line from Olivia Thirlby where she says “You don’t take action until it’s too late.”  I’m sure there are men out there who take action when it isn’t too late, but I have yet to meet them.  And then later on when Jason Schwartzman says “It happened all of a sudden” with regards to the break up between his character and Olivia’s.  I will just let you men know right now, it rarely actually happens all of a sudden.  It kind of goes hand in hand with the not taking action until it’s too late.

As it stands, I feel like this show is kind of a big exploration in what makes a guy cool.  And I guess on TV, being a private detective is cool?  But in real life, meh, I think I want something more.

And aside from that, I guess it just seems like a show more for men than for women.  It could totally surprise me in the coming few weeks, but I have a feeling this is just a club I don’t have entrance to, and something I just won’t get.
