The Vampire Diaries 1:3
I did not actually dislike this episode as much as the previous ones. Maybe because this one seemed like it was actually having some fun, instead of being totally serious, broody vampire with family issues the whole time.
I know last time I said I was irritated that every episode was starting with Damon killing someone, and this one started with him eating Caroline, but I didn’t mind it this time. Mostly because there was more too it than just scary monster in the woods and creepy fog. Also, I think this show is trying to show us all the rule number one from Scream - don’t have sex or you’ll die!
So in this episode Elena drops cheerleading, and Stephan tries out for the football team. This is a bit to me like that one time in Smallville when Clark went out for football – cheating much? Like, I know Stephan isn’t using his super speed and stuff, but he still doesn’t really get hurt, so it’s a bit unfair.
I think the biggest reason I have continued to watch this show is that I actually like Damon quite a bit. He’s much more interesting than Stephan, and certainly funnier. Plus I like Ian Somerhalder quite a bit, have liked him since Rules of Attraction. But, I have to say that since Damon seems so interested in Elena, Stephan should just really tell her the truth. I mean, how much easier would it have been if Stephan had said “look this might be scary but Damon and I are actually vampires and he is totally untrustworthy, so don’t invite him in.” Problem solved! But no, instead she invited Damon into her house and now he can get in whenever he wants.
I’m also not sure why Stephan is showing off about dates in history class when he’s making an attempt to fit in. No normal high school kid knows that stuff! Also, the dates weren’t that hard. I knew at least half of them off the top of my head too, and would have in high school too. Never claimed *I* was a normal high schooler.
So, on the whole, the show is improving a bit. I am not totally sold, but it’s better than some of the other stuff I’ve watched, and certainly looks better than the Smallville previews I’m seeing.
