Mercy 1:2
Since this show is more character driven rather than the plot, from what I can tell so far anyway, it’s a little difficult to do any kind of summary. I almost feel like I have to focus on each individual character to say what happened to them, as what happens overall is kind of less important.
I was happy to see Star Trek: The Next Generation alumni Colm Meaney as a doctor on this episode. He left Star Trek partway through the show, and although I haven’t exactly sought him out, I did wonder what happened to him. But here he is!
Anyway, on to the characters…
Veronica
She moves back into the totally unfinished house that her husband is redoing, since they have decided to get back together. It’s a disaster, like the plumbing doesn’t even work, so they have a fight. Honestly, the house doesn’t even have full walls or doors, so I have no idea how they can live there. I’d be worried about someone breaking in! Plus, they live in New Jersey, so he better hurry up and get that house put together before winter comes.
She also has a patient who gets into some kind of accident, they never say what but I’ll assume skateboarding based on the kids age, and ultimately has to lose his leg. It’s really sad to see him coming to the realization that things will be different after that, and he’ll have to adapt to a new kind of life.
Sonia
Last week, Sonia had a one night stand with some detective guy who came into the hospital with a gang related incident. She’s not pleased that he hasn’t called, because everyone calls her back, and she ends up calling him, both because she needs help with something patient related and she wants to find out what is going on.
The patient related thing is this older lady who is dying of HIV, and Sonia wants help finding the lady’s family. Which turns out to be a bust, but it reconnects her with detective dude so…fun!
Chloe
Some guy comes in because he got in a car accident, and he really really wants Chloe to get the doctor to prescribe him some pain meds. Poor Chloe is so innocent she doesn’t recognize he’s an addict!
Anyway, turns out he’s taking pain meds regularly because of this weird noise he keeps hearing, which comes back as nothing in all the tests. But Chloe believes him and hears the noise when she listens to his ear with a stethoscope. Which is weird and I dunno if I believe that works, but whatever. She takes him to the maternity ward and shows the doctor that there really is something, turns out the patient has a blood vessel that’s about to burst. No clue what they do about that, but Chloe is super glad she helped someone.
Chris
He doesn’t want to be friends with Veronica, he’s decided, he wants more. But she’s trying to fix her marriage, so he’s stuck in New Jersey for two years for no reason right now. He also says he isn’t going to try to sabotage her marriage, cuz he thinks that’ll happen without his influence at all. And I kind of agree, if for no better reason than Veronica’s husband Mike is kind of a bone head and annoying.
*****
We also learn this episode that several members of the hospital staff belong to a softball team, and Chloe reveals that she used to play softball in high school and college, was even going to try out for the Olympics but they removed competitive softball as an event. The team was apparently not good, but Chloe saves the day! I don’t think this makes the crew like her more, but they are certainly willing to take advantage of her softball skills.
They also call Chloe “My Little Pony” and “Rainbow Brite”, which I love. Totally hilarious! Especially when she’s wearing her Hello Kitty smock – which I also love, btw.
One redeeming factor about this show is that it makes me feel really glad that I’m healthy. It’s sad to see all these illnesses an dying people, so it makes you grateful.
