I totally paused!

Tact is just not saying true stuff

V 1:1

The honest truth about this show is that I wasn’t sure if I was going to watch it up until a couple of hours before it aired.  I’m not so into alien shows and didn’t really know anything about this show, but figured it might not be my thing.  However, curiosity about that pretty lady in the sky got me to watch, and on the whole, I’m glad I did.

The first thing I noticed, in watching the credits, was that Morena Baccarin was in the show, aka Inara from Firefly.  I wondered for a brief flash who she was playing, then realized she was the pretty lady in the sky!  Then I also saw the name Alan Tudyk, aka Wash from Firefly, and I thought whoa, all my shows are tied to the Whedonverse whether I try to make them that way or not!  I mean, two people from one of his shows?

I also noticed Morris Chestnut right away, even though I don’t know that I’ve ever actually seen an entire movie or show that he was in before.  I consider this a hazard of working in a movie theater for three years – you recognize all kinds of people even if you aren’t a fan of theirs.  Cept Morris happens to be pretty hot so who wouldn’t recognize him!

Then Scott Wolf shows up on screen, who is mostly famous for his role on Party of Five, which I never saw but to me is just a tie back to BTVS.  However, Scott also happens to be married to Kelley from the Real World New Orleans.  And yes, I knew this without looking it up.

We also get Laura Vandervoort, who played Kara on Smallville, and I didn’t really like her there.  Maybe I will like her more on this show, we’ll have to see what happens.

Anyway, I was instantly intrigued, and simultaneously suspicious, of the “We are of peace, always” motif from the V’s.  I’ve seen enough alien movies to know that the aliens are never really of peace, and they’re not interested in what’s best for humanity in the long run.  This set of aliens just happens to be more tricky about it than others.  Granted, I know virtually nothing about the show and I never saw the original, but the attack scene sure shows me that they are up to no good.

The V’s have come to Earth looking for water and a mineral that is common and abundant on our planet.  I’m wondering, is that mineral blood?  I don’t know a lot about science, but aren’t most of the minerals on the planet also available elsewhere in the solar system?  Or at least based on the space exploration we’ve been able to do.  Even if they aren’t, I am just suspicious, and I agree with the priest who says the V’s should have to earn people’s trust.

I am not in love with this show at this point, but I am interested enough to keep watching for awhile.  I read that they are only airing four episodes in 2009, and then the show is coming back in March after the Olympics air.  Hopefully I will either be fully pulled in or repelled by this show before then, cuz that is a long time to wait if I am still feeling on the fence.

And we’ll also see if ABC is able to keep a viewership on a show that is a little abnormal for network TV.  This generally seems like the kind of show you’d see on the Sy Fy channel, and I’m really curious if the populace is ready for it, since they’d rather watch Dancing with the Stars or American Idol.
